Ms. Estrada by the Q Brothers Collective
I will be directing the world premiere of this hip hop adaptation of Aristophanes's Lysistrata at the Flea Theater. Performances run from March 22nd - April 30th.
The boys at Acropolis U are too preoccupied with the Greek Games to treat their ladies right. But fierce feminist goddess, Liz Estrada, rallies her besties to take a stand – and campus chaos ensues. A Hip-Hop remix of Aristophanes’ classic comedy, ms. estrada may well be the Girl Anthem of 2018.
I have some fabulous collaborators on this project, including music director Postell Pringle (a member of the Q Brothers) and choreographer Ana “Rokafella” Garcia.
Performances are Wednesday–Monday at 7pm, with weekend matinees at 3pm. Tickets start at $15 with the lowest priced tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis. So, buy tickets soon, before the $15 tix sell out!
New Media Projects:
I've been directing several fiction podcasts produced by Gen-Z Media. The two newest ones are listed below. For podcasts that have been previously released, please check out the Audio Content / Podcasts page on this site.
Here's a great piece in the New York Times about podcasts for kids.
Six Minutes by David Kreizman and Gen-Z Media
Six Minutes is a mystery podcast for kids. And best of all, two episodes are released every week. It's ongoing! If your children get addicted to it (which they will), you won't have to wonder when new episodes will be coming out. Because they will come out every single week!
The show is about eleven-year-old Holiday, who is pulled from icy waters with no memory of who she is or where she came from. Are her mom and dad really who they say they are? And when begins to develop incredible physical and mental abilities, she’ll soon discover she’s not alone in the world.
Mayan Crystal by Fred Greenhalgh
In the spirit of Mayan folktales, The Mayan Crystal is the story of a modern Mayan girl’s magical journey into the rain forest to save her village from an ancient evil.
Projects in Development:
After the March by Itamar Moses
Itamar Moses and I are collaborating on a new collection of short plays. I directed workshops of this collection at the Orchard Project in the summer of 2017 and at the Drama League in the winter of 2017.
Featured Past Projects:
Nobody Loves You music by Gaby Alter, lyrics by Gaby Alter and Itamar Moses, book by Itamar Moses
I directed the New York premiere of Nobody Loves You at Second Stage.
A romantic comedy about the search for meaningful relationships in a culture dominated by the quest for popularity. When Jeff, a philosophy grad student, goes on a reality TV dating show to win back his ex, he instead finds a girl who might be the love of his life. But will she fall for him once he is seduced by the adulation of his fans?
Over the course of the show's development, I directed Nobody Loves You at the NAMT festival of New Musicals; at the Old Globe (world premiere production); in Goodspeed Musicals' Festival of New Artists; and at the Cape Cod Theatre Project.
The Old Globe production was nominated for four Craig Noel Awards, including Best New Musical and Best Director.
Nobody Loves You was the Best New Musical of 2012, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Babyprov a web comedy I directed and co-created with Emma Tattenbaum-Fine
The four episodes, about an improvisational acting class for babies, are posted at Babyprov.com. Please watch and share with your friends!
